A fire, of which the firefighters of the Protection and Emergency Response Service of the City of Sorel-Tracy were alerted around 10:30 a.m., caused very heavy damage to the Bernard-Gariépy secondary school. Since April, the building on Boulevard des Érables, in the Tracy sector, has been undergoing work to completely replace the exterior cladding, a project costing $22.3 million. The investigation will determine whether there is a link between the fire and the work in progress. The fire broke out in the attic located at the rear of the school, above the gymnasiums. All students were evacuated. No one was hurt. Sorel firefighters requested help from their colleagues in surrounding municipalities. Several scenarios are already being studied in order to relocate, if necessary, students and school staff members over the coming weeks. The information will be communicated as soon as possible. The school and the Bernard-Gariépy center will be closed for at least two days. This event also caused the closure of telephone and computer networks in schools in the Tracy sector (Saint-Jean-Bosco, Laplume, Martel and Enfant-Jésus). Email communications are also interrupted.
