Udoes not take a citizen approach. Jean-Pierre Barraud is a Royannais who has a sense of pragmatism, economy and cares about the environment. In support of the Citiz car-sharing network, it intends to develop this concept in Royan and, beyond, throughout the Royan metropolitan area.

What are we talking about? This involves setting up a system of shared cars, accessible on a self-service basis according to needs. The car-sharing structure manages the fleet of vehicles, their purchase, maintenance, insurance, etc. “The network member registers on an online platform or by telephone to reserve the car before collecting it at a location determined. The cost of using the vehicle is billed according to actual use per hour and per kilometer,” explains the person concerned.

Survey of residents

Users therefore share a car each in turn. For those who do not need a vehicle on a daily basis, this saves money. “Owning a car costs on average 6,000 euros per year, according to the Automobile Club. Car sharing is more economical if you do not use a car every day and if you travel less than 10,000 km per year,” says Citiz.

Jean-Pierre Barraud wants to develop car sharing in Royan.

If this idea first developed in large cities, such as , it is gradually spreading to smaller cities, such as recently in , a town of just under 50,000 inhabitants in Loir-et- Dear. “I am in contact with those who are behind this establishment. They started with one vehicle and a second will arrive soon. Here, we will first survey the population to find out the exact needs,” underlines Jean-Pierre Barraud.

Depending on the results of the investigation, Citiz will provide one, two or three branded vehicles. The car collection point must in any case be central to be able to access it on foot, by bus or by bike. The Royannais is thinking about the area around the station but “nothing has been decided yet”. He plans to contact Royan town hall to study what could be put in place. Knowing that, for him, the community has everything to gain.

“This car-sharing system makes it possible to reduce the number of vehicles and therefore free up space in public space. It gives air to cities with a reduction in greenhouse gases,” insists the Royannais.

Technical support

For example, in Bordeaux, the registration fee for this service is 40 euros. With a subscription of 16 euros per month, the use of the shared car costs its user 3 to 5 euros per hour depending on the model chosen and 5.50 to 7.50 € without subscription. To this must be added €0.42 to €0.52 per kilometer traveled, again depending on the type of car used, then €0.22 to €0.27 beyond 100 km traveled. We can simulate the cost of the journey before each use.

“We have already put into service between 2,500 and 3,000 vehicles in . In Royan, we will be there to provide technical support and knowledge of car sharing to project leaders. We are in the alternative to the main car or the second or third car in a household,” argues Nicolas Guenro, director of the Citiz cooperative, based in Bordeaux. All that remains is to unite interested people around this idea.
