Monday morning, in Wingles, Pas-de-Calais, a mother and two of her children died in a fire in their house. A terrible tragedy whose results could have been even worse without the intervention of a neighbor who rescued two boys trapped upstairs from the flames.
When they intervened, around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, the house of this family of six was already “totally on fire,” they explained. It was only after putting out the fire that emergency services discovered the lifeless bodies of the mother, aged 36, and her two daughters, aged 9 and 15.
“I took my ladder and we took them down”
But before the firefighters arrived, neighbors did not hesitate to do everything to help the family. “I saw that the children were near the window, I saw a little smoke,” Marc explains to our colleagues at BFM. They were two boys, aged 11 and 12, who were trapped on the first floor of the house.
“I took my ladder and we brought them down,” continues Marc, adding that “it was impossible to enter” the house, invaded by “too much thick and black smoke”. To AFP, the neighbor assures that these sons still tried to enter the burning house, from the back, but that they did not succeed.
-Thanks to this action, the two boys were only slightly injured. “The municipality would like to highlight the heroic intervention of the neighbors and the professionalism of the firefighters who contained the fire,” underlined the mayor of Wingles, Sébastien Messent.
