As the fires continue to rage in Los Angeles (United States), leaving behind a landscape of desolation and a death toll of 24, a surprising fact has attracted the attention of the American media. A Malibu villa worth $9 million (around 8.8 million euros) was spared from the flames, reports the New York Post.

A true “miracle”

The images published by our colleagues of this property, belonging to David Steiner, a Texan retiree, are impressive. At the seaside, in the Pacific Palisades district, all the villas disappeared in the fire. All except one.

“It’s a miracle,” said the owner. According to him, the robust construction of the house, designed to resist earthquakes, probably played a role in its preservation. Made of stucco and stone, and equipped with a fireproof roof, the structure rests on stilts deeply anchored in the bedrock to withstand powerful waves.

12,000 structures affected

“I had no memories of my family there. It wasn’t my family’s home,” explained the man, who was an executive in a waste management company. The villa is simply a pied-à-terre purchased when two of her three boys were in the area for studies and the family needed somewhere to stay while they visited.

“My thoughts are with those who lost their homes,” said the lucky homeowner. These devastating fires, fanned by violent winds, have already destroyed or damaged more than 12,000 structures in the city since Tuesday January 7. 150,000 people were forced to flee. This Monday, the flames are still out of control.
