Evgeni Malkin is out with an upper-body injury and being evaluated on a daily basis, and he did not play against the Columbus Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old center participated in the entire morning skate, practicing in his usual spot on the second line. Cody Glass took his place against Columbus between left winger Michael Bunting and right winger Anthony Beauvillier, who was initially expected to be left out in favor of Jesse Puljujarvi, who joined the lineup for the first time since December 7.
Malkin will miss a game for the first time since he was suspended four games from April 12 to 21, 2022.
In his 19th NHL season, Malkin is third on the Penguins with 32 points (eight goals, 24 assists), behind Sidney Crosby (42) and Rickard Rakell (33). He and Crosby each played the first 41 games of the season and all 82 games the previous two campaigns.
The Penguins are also without forward Philip Tomasino, who is being evaluated on a weekly basis with a lower-body injury. Tomasino skated solo on Tuesday.
