Sean Higgins, who faced two counts of death by vehicle and two counts of manslaughter, rejected a Crown offer of 35 years in prison. He was also charged with failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident and attempting to tamper with evidence.
This means the case will go to trial.
If convicted after a trial, Higgins faces more than 40 years in prison. He is due back in court on February 4.
Higgins allegedly hit both men after making a dangerous maneuver while overtaking on the right while completely drunk. The two victims were riding a bicycle at the time of the accident.
The driver admitted to the police that he had drunk “five or six beers”, some of which were at the wheel of his vehicle, a few minutes before the event.
