Several people lost their lives on Tuesday in a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the border region between Nepal and China, reports the Xinhua news agency.
The victims were recorded in three towns in Tibet, in southwest China, Xinhua said, citing the Tibet Autonomous Region Earthquake Bureau.
The earthquake occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time (01:05 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 km, particularly affecting the Tibetan town of Shigatse, Chinese television channel CCTV said, citing the China Seismic Network Center.
The epicenter was located by the American Geological Survey (USGS) near the Nepalese town of Lobuche, in a mountainous area on the Sino-Nepalese border.
The earthquake was strongly felt as far away as the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, located around 400 kilometers from the epicenter.
Panicked residents ran out of their homes as tremors shook buildings in Kathmandu, Indian media reported.
