L’Tunisian Human Rights Observatory’man (OTDH) urged the authorities to obtain the release of 120 Tunisian nationals detained in Libya. Mustapha Abdelkabir, director of’OTDH, said many detainees were accused of “minor or trumped-up charges”, with sentences ranging from’one to five years in prison.
According to Abdelkabir, the majority of these people were arrested for work-related conflicts, lack of medical certificates or suspected customs violations. He stressed that all the detainees had entered Libya legally, either as workers, traders or visitors.
Abdelkabir rejected any link between the detainees and extremism, describing them as “ordinary citizens”most of whom are aged 22 to 30, some aged 45 to 55.
He called on Tunisian authorities to collaborate with their Libyan counterparts for their release, stressing that many have already served half of their sentences.
He also highlighted the presence of 32 Tunisian women and children, believed to be family members of individuals affiliated with the Islamic State group, who remain detained in Libya and have not yet been repatriated.
