Resigning Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared his “only regret” during his speech Monday, during which he announced he will step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and prime minister as soon as a new Liberal leader will be elected by the members.

During his speech, Justin Trudeau notably praised the achievements of his party since his election as head of the country in 2015.

He defended his decision to prorogue Parliament rather than call an election by saying Ottawa MPs needed a fresh start.

“We have been able to accomplish very little in the last few months in Parliament. Parliament needs a reset; needs to calm down a little to get back to work for Canadians and not engage in constant petty politics, which is what we are seeing from the Conservatives,” he declared.

In addition to criticizing the Conservative Party, Justin Trudeau also attacked leader Pierre Poilievre by declaring, among other things, that his vision “for [le] country is not the right one for Canadians.

“A regret”

Asked about the regrets he has about his performance over the last 10 years, Justin Trudeau admitted that he would have liked to reform the voting system.

“I still think that if our electoral system had been changed so that people could put a first, second or third choice on the ballot, the parties would have spent more time looking at the things they had in common to to be the second or third choice of voters rather than seeing the polarization that we had,” he said.

The Prime Minister, however, added that he cannot “unilaterally change [le] voting method [du] pays».
