A motorcycle repairman shot dead a police officer who came to resolve a dispute Friday night in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district and now faces murder charges.

Police quickly arrested the suspect, identified as the perpetrator of seven gunshots that fatally injured Lieutenant Colonel Banrang Kesaporn, deputy head of the criminal police at Sai Mai station.

Aged 41, Lieutenant Colonel Banrang was discovered lying in a pool of blood outside a hair salon, the victim of several gunshot wounds. Despite the rapid intervention of rescuers and his transfer to hospital, he did not survive his injuries.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the police officer, who had just finished his shift, was dining in a nearby food store when he was approached by a Burmese citizen. The latter asked him to intervene in an altercation with the motorcycle repairer.

While the lieutenant colonel tried to calm the situation, the suspect returned to his workshop to arm himself with a 9 mm caliber pistol before returning to the scene and opening fire on the police officer. The murderer then fled but was quickly apprehended by the police.

During his arrest, the suspect admitted the facts. He is now charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal use of a firearm.
