Drunk Police Officer Causes Spectacular Escape on New Year’s Eve

Thirteen detainees are on the run after a Zambian police officer, under the influence of alcohol, opened prison cells on the morning of December 31. This unexpected incident, which occurred at the dawn of the new year, raised serious concerns for public safety, according to an official statement published on Friday January 3 by the Zambian police, reported French media including BFMTV.

The incriminated agent, “in an advanced state of intoxication”, forcibly grabbed a colleague’s keys before unlocking the cell doors. Addressing the detainees, he reportedly told them that they were “free to go out to celebrate the new year.” Among the 15 prisoners involved, 13 did not hesitate to seize this opportunity and escaped.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed that the fugitives include individuals being prosecuted for serious crimes, increasing the risk to public safety. “The suspects remain on the run, and their release poses a significant threat,” he said.

As for the police officer responsible for this reckless decision, he was immediately arrested after the incident. The authorities are actively continuing their efforts to find the escapees.
