Snow, rain, ice: it’s a whole system that will affect the central and eastern United States over the next few days. This would be the first snowstorm of the season for many areas.
Millions of people affected
An imposing system, coming from Colorado, continues its course eastward and could deposit generous quantities in its path by Tuesday. In its sights are notably the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey. This would be the first snowstorm of the year in places.
The system will cover a huge portion of the American territory: we are talking about a possible broadside in a corridor stretching from Kansas to Maryland. In mountainous terrain, these accumulations could reach 30 cm, or even 40 cm locally.
Up to 10 mm of ice in places
Just south of the corridor, freezing rain could arrive and dump moderate amounts of ice, including on the Kentucky side which could receive up to 10 mm. The precipitation will begin first on Sunday for the more western states and will then affect the American East Coast on Monday.
Further south, states would experience heavy rain and particularly severe weather could be unleashed in the state of Georgia.
The return of the cold
Behind the system, particularly cold weather is looming. In places, the mercury could drop up to 10°C below seasonal norms at the start of the week. This bitter cold should even reach the state of Florida. In the north of the state, minimums could approach freezing, particularly near Tampa, Jacksonville and Orlando. Enough to cause a veritable rain of iguanas!
