The spread of a new virus known as human pneumonia virus (HMPV) has sparked concern in China, with the country seeing a significant increase in infection cases, particularly among children under 14 years.
This comes just five years after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which prompted authorities to take strict preventive measures.
Widely distributed in the north
The virus is believed to have spread to several regions of China, with most infections recorded in the northern province.
Authorities have declared a state of alert to curb the spread of the virus.
No vaccine yet
The Chinese government has confirmed that there is no vaccine for HMPV, saying treatment depends solely on medical care.
He advised residents to wear masks and avoid crowds to limit the spread of infection.
It’s similar to the flu with severe symptoms
HMPV is similar to flu viruses, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, wheezing and nasal congestion. However, it can progress to more serious pathologies, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, which can lead to death in some cases.
Incubation period and transmission mechanism
The incubation period for HMPV ranges from 3 to 6 days. The virus is spread by droplets from coughing or sneezing, or by direct contact with an infected person.
The infection can also be spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face.
Prevention is the solution
Authorities have stressed the importance of public awareness and prevention efforts to reduce the spread of infection.
He recommends following simple measures such as washing hands regularly, wearing masks and avoiding close contact with sick people.
