Enzo Maresca met the press following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
Cole Palmer started strongly for the Blues, giving them a first-half lead, but late match drama saw Jean-Philippe Mateta restore equality for the Eagles. Here’s every word Maresca said after the match, reflecting on the events on the pitch.
On the Match Result
“We probably did enough to win the game today. I believe we created enough chances between the first and second half to secure a victory. However, in football you have to be clinical; otherwise, the match remains open, especially in a place like this where any transition or corner can reinvigorate their energy. It’s unfortunate that we conceded a late goal, but overall our performance warranted a win today. »

Analysts weigh in on Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham Hotspur
“Just a few weeks ago we were discussing the title race. Personally, I never saw us as contenders. We knew teams like Newcastle, Aston Villa and Manchester City would be strong. It’s not about ranking for me; it’s about identifying areas for improvement. Today’s performance was commendable with and without the ball. I recognize that at this stage of the season some teams may be struggling. Every match poses different challenges, and today I believe our failure to capitalize on chances was crucial. If we had gone 2-0 the game probably would have been over, but staying open invites risks like transitions and corners. »

On Substitutions and Team Selection
“It’s not so much that we haven’t made changes; rather, it’s a matter of evaluating who we have. Can you suggest a player I should replace today? »
On Nkunku and Felix on the Bench
“Yes, they were available, but who would we have made changes for? Making substitutions just for the sake of principle doesn’t suit me. Today, every player on the field performed very well. Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, Nico Jackson, Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, Moi Caicedo, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong all contributed positively. My philosophy is to only make changes when there is a valid reason, whether it be a player underperforming or fatigue affecting their pressing. Nico was substituted because he felt fatigue while pressing; therefore, Marc Guiu brought fresh energy. Likewise, Noni replaced Jadon for the same reason. »

On Josh Acheampong’s Premier League debut
“All the players delivered solid performances today, but if I had to highlight one it would be Josh. At his age, making his debut is significant. He has the potential to be a remarkable asset to this club, but he must navigate his growth wisely. We felt he was ready today, and he certainly showed his quality. At his age, he has to balance aggression with hard work; every opportunity is a chance for him to shine more. »
On Potential Transfers and Defensive Depth
“Indeed, whether or not we decide to strengthen our squad, Josh has proven his abilities. Despite injuries to Wes Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, it remains to be seen whether we will make any adjustments in the transfer market. »
On the Next FA Cup
” Absolutely. I’ve just learned that after this month we finally have a full week to prepare, which is a perfect opportunity to focus on both the FA Cup and our Premier League commitments. »
On the Quest for the Top 4
“The race will be close until the end; our position can fluctuate from sixth to third place in no time. Ultimately, everything will be decided in the final weeks of the season. »
On Improving the Clinical Finish
“The priority is to create chances first. If you’re generating opportunities, you’re on the right track. The challenge lies in converting these opportunities. Reflecting on our game against Ipswich, we had plenty of chances. Sometimes you can score every chance; other times you mark one out of every ten created. It’s just a part of football. We must aim to be even more intense in our preparation, although I think the current intensity and intentions shown by my players have been excellent. Clearly we need to improve our finishing, because we are one of the best teams in terms of goals scored. »
On the Progress of Romeo Lavia
“I expect him to be involved in the next game. »
On the Form of Nicolas Jackson
“As a striker he goes through ups and downs in terms of form. Today Nico had some clear scoring opportunities. What is essential is that it is constantly in the right place. I hope his luck changes next time; nevertheless, I think he contributed well today. »
