Tension is rising a notch in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Moscow announced on Saturday January 6, 2025 its intention to respond firmly to the strikes carried out the day before by Ukraine, using, according to the Kremlin, American ATACMS missiles.
These weapons, seen as a significant escalation in the arming of Ukraine by the West, would cross a “red line” according to Russian authorities.
An attack that worries Moscow
The Russian army said it had intercepted eight ATACMS missiles during an attack targeting the Russian region of Belgorod, located near the Ukrainian border. Although Ukraine has not officially confirmed the use of these missiles, the incident provoked an immediate reaction from the Kremlin.
“These actions of the kyiv regime, supported by its Western guardians, will be subject to reprisals,” the Russian military said in a statement. Moscow sees these strikes as a new demonstration of the growing involvement of the United States and its allies in the conflict.
ATACMS: a controversial weapon
THE missiles ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System)of American origin, are capable of hitting targets at distances of up to 300 kilometers. Their use in this conflict represents a major turning point, providing Ukraine with an increased ability to hit strategic targets deep within Russian territory.
-These missiles are considered by Moscow as a direct threat to its national security, especially since they can be used for high-precision strikes against military or logistical infrastructure.
An expected Russian response
Russia’s promise of retaliation raises concerns within the international community. Moscow has not yet specified the nature of its response, but this declaration reinforces fears of an escalation of the conflict, already marked by months of intense fighting.
Western involvement at the heart of tensions
Western military support for Ukraine, particularly in the form of deliveries of advanced weapons, remains a major point of friction between Moscow and Western capitals. The United States, which supplied ATACMS missiles to kyiv, is particularly targeted by Russian critics.
An ever more intense conflict
As fighting continues on several fronts, the attack involving ATACMS missiles illustrates a new stage in this war which has lasted since February 2022. Moscow’s next actions, combined with the response of kyiv and its allies, will be closely scrutinized. closely by the international community, in a context where each decision could have global repercussions.
