The Premier League has clarified the disputed decision which allowed Anthony Gordon’s goal for Newcastle United to stand in their recent clash against Tottenham Hotspur, following a lengthy VAR review.
During the action leading to the goal, the ball hit Joelinton’s arm after a juggling attempt from Lucas Bergvall headed towards Pedro Porro, with the Brazilian’s interception changing the course of the game. , Bruno Guimarães played the ball into the path of Gordon, who fired a powerful shot past Spurs debutant goalkeeper Brandon Austin, leveling the score after Dominic Solanke had initially given the visitors the lead.
The league’s Match Center said: “The on-field decision to award the goal was upheld by VAR, who carefully examined Joelinton’s possible handball during the build-up phase. It was determined that his arm was positioned naturally at his side and that the contact was involuntary.”
