The electronic sticker is becoming more and more common. It can be purchased on several websites, including E-vignette.ch, the official website of the Confederation. Here, it always costs 40 francs, so there is no need to worry.
On the other hand, other independent suppliers can also sell stickers online, and charge a supplement of 4 francs. These 4 francs correspond to the amount that the Confederation pays to the distributors of the sticker.
Today, the purchase of self-adhesive or electronic stickers works in parallel. The advantage with the electronic version is that a single sticker is sometimes enough for several vehicles. For example, two cars with interchangeable plates can share the same sticker. The same goes for buying a new vehicle while keeping the same number of plates: no need to buy a new sticker!
When you buy a sticker online, there is a “visible to the public” box that you can check. By checking the visible option, everyone can find out if an electronic sticker is associated with this plate number, from the OFDF Via portal.
This option is useful for example when other people want to use the vehicle, or for the mechanic if he needs to test it on the highway, for example. Visibility can also be activated later, after purchasing the electronic sticker.
Like the sticker, the e-vignette is checked randomly. The police enter the plate into a special application in which all the electronic stickers are located. The offender is liable to a fine of 200 francs in addition to the price of the sticker. Generalized surveillance, as had been envisaged, is not currently feasible.
