Two athletes from the Gaulois de Disraeli civil club in the masters category took part in the Rouge et Or Invitation to Peps athletics meeting at Laval University recently.
Valérie Poulin from Stratford, who participated for the first time in a heavy hammer throwing competition, a 20-pound machine, achieved quite a feat. During her second attempt, she achieved a throw of 9.46 meters which allowed her to move ahead of Ontario’s Laura Sivers for first place in the national rankings.
In her first months of practicing athletics, she experienced meteoric progress propelling her to the top of the Canadian hierarchy according to her coach André Garon. During the summer season, she dominated the national scene in the shot put and 4 kg hammer throw, and now, she takes the lead in the heavy hammer throw while being second in the shot put.
For her part, Thetfordoise Fannie Royer made a return to track competitions. She picked up where she left off by achieving a new personal best over 1,000 meters, by 4 seconds. His time of 3 minutes 23 seconds and 30 hundredths allowed him to take 19th place out of 29 athletes, most of them aged in their low twenties.
Finally, in the open category, javelin throw specialist Charles-Antoine Bolduc made his hammer throw debut. He threw the 35-pound machine 12.28 meters which gave him fifth place.
