An investigation was opened this Monday, December 30 after the discovery of the lifeless body of an infant in a garbage bag in Mably, on the banks of the canal.
The macabre discovery took place shortly before 1 p.m. this Monday, December 30, by a jogger, on the developed greenway which runs along the Roanne canal, near Mably, very close to the ULM base. After seeing a garbage bag with a baby's leg protruding from it, the witness immediately contacted the Roanne police, who called in firefighters, including divers, as well as a team from Smur.
Autopsy results expected
On site, the emergency services could only note the death, which would date back at least several hours, of this little girl, “whose age will have to be determined as part of the investigation (entrusted to the local judicial police service of Roanne, Editor’s note) and in particular medicolegal operations”, tells us the Roanne Prosecutor’s Office.
Did the mother deny the pregnancy and give birth to a stillborn child? Was the child born alive and was he killed? Who placed the remains on the banks of the canal? Many questions, to which the autopsy which was scheduled for Tuesday in Saint-Étienne should provide some answers, are pending. “While waiting to determine whether the child was born alive and viable before dying, the investigation is being carried out by the head of research into the causes of death,” specifies the Prosecutor's Office.
Due to our advanced completion to Tuesday, December 31, we cannot report the results of the autopsy.
