A shooting broke out this Wednesday, January 1, in a restaurant located in a town in southern Montenegro, killing at least ten people, including two minors. The main suspect, Bajice AM, 45, fled.

This Wednesday, January 1, a man opened fire in a restaurant located in Cetinje, a town in southern Montenegro, public radio and television (RTCG) reported early in the afternoon.

According to Danilo Saranovic, Minister of the Interior, at least ten people were killed in this shooting, including two minors from the Vuletic family which owns the restaurant in which the tragedy took place. According to information provided by the government and the police, it was a fight in which weapons were drawn and which degenerated. The suspect even killed members of his own family in this event described as “private” by the Minister of the Interior.

The main suspect, Bajice, AM, 45, “fled the building and fled,” police said. He is currently wanted by law enforcement and the army.

Following the tragedy, and in a speech in the evening, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic announced a three-day national mourning, on January 2, 3 and 4, and specified that four people had been seriously injured.

“The doctors are fighting to save them,” the Prime Minister said, adding that “all the police teams, special units and all possible law enforcement agencies (were) in Cetinje.”

The Prime Minister also announced new restrictions to come on gun ownership. “This tragedy raises the question of who can have weapons in Montenegro,” he added.
