Around Vire Normandy, has your municipality gained or lost inhabitants?

Like every end of the year, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, or INSEEpublished its latest figures concerning the census of the French population.

In this case, these are the figures for the year 2022. Also, the institute each time specifies two types of population for a territory: the municipal population and the total population.

The first includes “people who have their usual residence in the territory”, and the second adds this figure with that of “apart” people, that is to say those “whose usual residence is in another municipality but who maintain a residential link with it.

It can therefore count the same person several times. This is why, for what follows, we will only take into account municipal population figures.

Vire Normandie continues its momentum

Thus, the Virois bocage turns out to be, like several Normandy departments such as Manche and Orne (but unlike Calvados), in slight loss of inhabitants. According to INSEE, between 2016 and 2022, the district of Vire lost 1,394going from 72,565 to 71,171 souls.

But from the point of view of the municipalities, the situation is of course more nuancedand variable. In Vire Normandy, to start. If we could initially believe in a negative development, with a population of 18,240 in 2011, 17,425 in 2016, and 17,411 in 2022, the dynamic is in reality positive: the capital of Bocage has won 821 inhabitants between 2019 and 2022.

The new communes of Bocage are suffering

It is on the other hand more negative for other important municipalities in the sector. The new municipalities of Noues de Sienne (which increases from 4,456 inhabitants in 2016 to 4,236 in 2022), Valdallière (from 6,054 to 5,692), and especially Condé-en-Normandie (from 6,671 to 6,018) record losses of several hundred citizens.

The decline is a little less brutal in Souleuvre-en-Bocage (from 8,789 to 8,643) and Les Monts d'Aunay (from 4,704 to 4,664), especially when we know that Aunay gained 110 administered between 2021 and 2022.

Among the other communes of Pré-Bocage which exceed a thousand inhabitants, Villers-Bocage and Cahagnes stagnate (going respectively from 3,110 to 3,113, and from 1,398 to 1,408), unlike Dialan sur Chaîne (from 1,069 to 1,009) and Val d'Arry, which continue with the progressionincreasing from 2,272 to 2,455 inhabitants in six years.
