At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured when a vehicle plowed into a crowd in a tourist area of New Orleans, city authorities announced Wednesday. “We are responding to a mass casualty accident involving a vehicle that drove into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured and ten dead”declares the authority responsible for emergencies, in a press release.
According to CBS News, which cites witnesses, the driver of the truck which hit passers-by then got out of the vehicle to open fire and the police responded. “All I saw was a truck hitting everyone on the left side of the sidewalk in Bourbon [Street] »said another witness interviewed by CNN, who also said he heard gunshots.
The incident occurred on Bourbon and Canal Street at the end of New Year’s Eve celebrations, hours before kickoff of a college football game hosted at the city’s Caesars Superdome, where several thousand spectators are expected.
