Milan introduces near-total smoking ban

Key information

  • Milan becomes the first major Italian city to ban smoking in public spaces.
  • Fines of up to 240 euros will be imposed for violations of the new rule.
  • People are allowed to smoke at a distance of at least 10 meters from others.

Starting in the new year, Milan will implement a near-total ban on smoking in public spaces. Milan is thus the first large Italian city to take such a measure. Fines of up to 240 euros are provided for in the event of an infraction. The new rule states that people can only smoke in public if they keep a distance of at least 10 meters from other citizens. This regulation applies to traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars, but does not extend to electronic cigarettes.

History of anti-smoking measures

Milan had already taken steps to reduce air pollution and promote healthier lifestyle habits among its residents. As a major economic and financial center with more than 1.3 million inhabitants, Milan is also one of the most polluted cities in Italy. In 2021, smoking was banned in public transport stops, green spaces and sports facilities. The extension of this ban was approved in 2020.
