The ship was taken to Finnish waters to be boarded without Russian authorization.

Finnish authorities said Saturday they were moving to investigate a ship carrying Russian oil suspected of damaging an underwater power cable and caused four Internet lines to break.

Finland boarded the Eagle S on Thursday, a ship suspected of provoking a Wednesday breakdown of the Estlink 2 submarine electricity cable linking Finland and Estonia. The Cook Islands-registered vessel is also suspected of damaging or causing the rupture of four internet lines. “Finnish police have launched an operation to transfer the Eagle S from the Gulf of Finland to Svartbeck, an inland anchorage close to the port of Kilpilahti”Helsinki police said in a statement.

NATO has announced its intention to strengthen its presence in the Baltic Sea, in response to this possible sabotage of submarine cables. The Kremlin indicated on Friday that it was not concerned by the subject.

This Russian tanker carried out a very suspicious maneuver precisely above the Estlink 2.

With its anchor scraping the seabed, it could easily have cut the cables.

The countries around the Baltic Sea are on alertfearing a possible act of sabotage, after a series of breakdowns on power cables, telecommunications links and gas pipelines since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Finnish customs believe the ship is part of a ghost fleet of aging tankers who seek to escape sanctions on the sale of Russian oil.
