The President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, had assured that “every square meter of the Panama Canal” belongs to the Panamanians, but the response of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, was not long in coming.
Trump wrote on his social networks: “We'll see”, publishing a photo of the American flag waving on the water with the writing: “Welcome to the American channel”.
In previous days, Trump had threatened to regain control of the Panama Canal, accusing the Central American country of charging excessive fees to use the sea crossing.
Mulino, in a video message, shortly after the magnate's words, reiterated: “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and the adjacent area is Panamanian and will remain so”, recalling that the Torrijos-Carter treaties of 1977 “agreed on the dissolution of the former Canal Zone, recognizing Panamanian sovereignty and the complete handover of the canal to Panama, which concluded on December 31, 1999.”
Furthermore, Mulino assured that his country's tariffs for the use of the canal “are not a whim. They are established publicly and in open hearing, considering market conditions, international competition, operating costs and maintenance needs of the interoceanic waterway,” he explained.
