As reported by https://www.reuters.com/technology/trump-says-it-could-be-worth-keeping-tiktok-us-little-while-2024-12-22/ reuters, President-elect Donald Trump said the United States needs to “start thinking” about keeping TikTok “for some time,” in the strongest show of support yet for the Chinese social media platform. TikTok is currently facing an uphill battle against a new law signed by the Biden administration that will see it banned in the US starting in January.

TikTok's appeal against the new US law that takes effect in January fell apart earlier this month after a federal appeals court rejected its request to delay the ban. He filed an emergency injunction https://www.notebookcheck.net/TikTok-files-an-emergency-injunction-against-the-US-ban.930202.0.html to get a reprieve until the Trump administration takes office and the case being considered by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court agreed but said it would not block the law from taking effect on January 19, 2025. The law – Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act – classifies TikTok as a national security threat. Under its terms, TikTok must sell itself to a new owner in the United States or face a ban in the country.

“We're going to have to start thinking because, you know, we went on TikTok and we had a great response with billions of views, billions and billions of views,” Trump told the AmericaFest crowd. “They brought me a graph, and it was a record, and it was so beautiful to look at, and as I looked at it, I said, 'Maybe we need to keep this sucker for a while,'” he added.
