Simonelli accepts the position of president of Serie A

Ezio Simonelli has accepted the role of new president of the Lega Serie A. The formal transition took place this morning. The official statement from Via Rosellini should arrive on Monday, thus putting an end to the stalemate that was created after the election of Simonelli by 14 clubs yesterday afternoon, due to the obstructionism of those who did not support the former number one of the League Board of Auditors. In particular of Claudio Lotito who is not resigned to the overturning of the political majority within the top division.

Simonelli's election certifies the new balance of Serie A, with a new block led by Inter, Juventus, Roma, and Bologna who have been able to unite former allies of Lotito, such as Atalanta, Monza and Udinese. In the name of the desire to re-establish a more serene climate with the FIGC, favored by Simonelli's excellent relationship with the federal president Gabriele Gravina.

Simonelli's acceptance of the nomination also has the effect of further weakening the convocation of the League Council for 27 December by Lorenzo Casini, now former president who therefore no longer has this power. In fact, the meeting on 27 December should not take place (otherwise warnings could be issued to the sports justice bodies). The Council had been convened to express a sort of approval for the appointment of Simonelli, accused by Lotito and Casini of conflict of interest due to his roles with the companies of the Fininvest group, owners of Monza. But Simonelli has already resigned, thus complying with the rules regarding incompatibility.

In any case, this is an anomalous procedure, not foreseen by the League's Statute. And at most, after yesterday's election, the convocation of the Council should have been carried out by Luca Percassi, regent in the capacity of vice-president. Now the new League Council will have to be formed: appointment at the assembly on 10 January, when the new organizational chart of Serie A will be completed, after the election of Simonelli as president, accepted this morning by the person concerned.

The new federal councilors of Serie A will also have to be identified on January 10th. Here the game of Lotito's possible confirmation in the group of Serie A representatives in the FIGC executive meetings is being played out. In the new majority there are two sides: on the one hand, those who would like to leave the owner of Lazio out completely, on the other, those who would prefer to confirm him to favor a less conflictual future.
