The German League (DFL) announced a historic decision: from the 2025/26 season, the German Super Cup will bear the name of Franz Beckenbauerundisputed icon of German and world Football, passed away on 7 January 2024 at the age of 78.
A tribute to the “Kaiser” of football
The annual competition between the champion of Bundesliga and the winner of the German Cup will be called Supercup Franz Beckenbauerin honor of one of the greatest footballers of all time. The first edition with the new name will be held on August 16, 2025.
The decision of the DFL and the DFB (German Football Association) is a tribute to the extraordinary contribution of Beckenbauernot only for his successes on the pitch, but also for his role in shaping German and international football.
“Franz Beckenbauer would like this match to be named after him, especially since he won both competitions several times,” he declared Heidi Beckenbauerwidow of the champion.
A unique legacy
Franz Beckenbauer ha vinto five Bundesliga titles (1969, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1980) e four German Cups (1966, 1967, 1969, 1971). But his greatness doesn't stop there: he raised the FIFA World Cup both as a footballer (1974) and as a coach (1990)and was the face of the organizational success of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

“It is our duty to honor the achievements and legacy of Franz Beckenbauer. Renaming the Super Cup is a symbolic gesture that links its name to football in its entirety, professional and otherwise.”

“Franz Beckenbauer was a son of the Bundesliga. Few people have influenced her like he has. It is fitting that the Super Cup bears his name, thanks to the support of the Beckenbauer family and the collaboration with the DFB.”
New design and logo for the Super Cup
The DFL has confirmed that the trophy, logo and Super Cup events will be redesigned to reflect the new name and celebrate the memory of the legendary German number 5.
