Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy he was sentenced by the Court of Cassation for corruption and influence peddling to one year in prison with the obligation to wear an electronic bracelet. The French media reported this, explaining that this is an unprecedented punishment for a former French head of state. Three years of ineligibility are added to the sentence. Sarkozy, 69, will be summoned before a judge who will have to determine how the electronic bracelet should be applied.

Sarkozy’s lawyers have made it known that the former president will “comply” with the sentence but will also turn to the European Court of Human Rights. The former head of state was convicted of a “corruption pact” made with the magistrate Gilbert Azibert, who allegedly provided him with information regarding a trial against him in exchange for an important position in Monaco. The case emerged in 2014 from some wiretaps carried out by investigators who were investigating alleged Libyan financing of the 2007 presidential campaign
