Vanuatu, 7.3 earthquake: the situation after the strong earthquake

And earthquake of 7.3 it occurred at a depth of 43 kilometers just 30 kilometers west of Vanuatu’s capital Port Vilain the Pacific Ocean. Although the earthquake occurred near the coast and not on the mainland, given its intensity, considerable damage was still recorded and there were also numerous victims.

What followed was verified two other aftershocks of magnitude: 5.5 and 5.4. Furthermore, following the earthquake, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu reported the possibility of tsunami waves ranging from 0.3 to 1 meter above the tide level off the coast of Vanuatu, but later the alarm was suspended and withdrawn.

In these first hours we learned that, for example, a building that houses the US and French embassies in the capital of Vanuatu was damaged. From the images released on social media it can be seen that the earthquake caused a concrete pillar to collapse, cracked part of a wall and bent the windows of the building. The strong earthquake collapsed bridges, triggered landslides and seriously damaged numerous buildings. The stories of the first witnesses also speak of bodies thrown to the ground.

The words of the United States ambassador after the earthquake

The US Embassy said the building where he worked suffered: “considerable damage” and is “closed” until further notice. The Ambassador then added: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this earthquake and the US Government is working closely with our partners in Vanuatu.”
