Senegal is preparing to turn a new page in its footballing history with the imminent appointment of Pope Thiaw as national coach. The former local coach should succeed Aliou Cisseemblematic figure of Senegalese football, crowned African champion in 2022.
While official confirmation is expected shortly, major clarification has already been made on the remuneration from Thiaw. According to Dr Nalla Socé Diop, technical advisor to the Minister of Sports, the new coach will not receive the same salary as his predecessor.
“Aliou Cissé had reached heights after years of hard work. Pape Thiaw will have to prove himself to claim equivalent emoluments”he justified. Clearly, Thiaw will start with remuneration lower to 30 million CFA francs monthly magazines from Cissé. This decision reflects a policy based on merit and results.
The challenge is therefore immense for Pape Thiaw, who will have to prove his worth at the head of Lions of the Teranga to hope to negotiate a salary increase similar to that of his predecessor, now an essential reference in Senegalese football.
