The Russian army claimed Tuesday the capture of a new locality in eastern Ukraine, Gannivka, at a time when Ukrainian troops are struggling to stop Russian advances in this area of the front.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have captured this town located less than ten kilometers south of Kurakhové, a town which is close to a large deposit of lithium, a rare mineral. This announcement comes the day after the satisfaction addressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to his troops, who, according to him, have “the initiative across the entire front line”. The Russian army will conquer 189 Ukrainian localities in 2024, he assured in a speech given to the main executives of his Ministry of Defense.
The Ukrainian army, undermined by a lack of men and weapons, has been on the defensive for more than a year. Since the fall, his forces have been retreating more and more rapidly. According to Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov, Russia has taken 4,500 km2 of Ukrainian territory this year, and is currently advancing at “30 km2 per day”.
