A fire broke out during the night from Monday to Tuesday in the installations of the Fontenoy sugar refinery (Antoing), near Tournai. The fire started in a silo containing lime. The extinction, which is delicate, is still in progress.
The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Tuesday, around 2:50 a.m., that a fire had broken out in the installations of SA Iscal Sugar located along the Chaussée de la Sucrerie in Fontenoy, in the entity of ‘Antoning. Coming from the Tournai and Blaton barracks, two pumpers, two tankers, a ladder truck and a command vehicle were dispatched to the site.
“The fire started in a silo storing lime. This tank contained between 6 and 8 cubic meters of lime. Extinguishing took a long time to the extent that we are prohibited from using water to extinguish this lime on fire”, explains Captain Johan Fastrez who is leading the intervention.
“We have to shovel out small quantities of lime, then slake them with a special powder. The lime is then placed in the bucket of a bulldozer and then evacuated. The operation is still in progress. There is still some for two hours of work”, the officer said around 6:30 a.m.
The intervention mobilized around twenty firefighters. There were no injuries to personnel. This start of fire did not disrupt the work of the sugar factory which continues normally.
