This Tuesday at 9:05 p.m., for the first time, Stéphane Bern and Lorànt Deutsch take us to the Southern Hemisphere, to the island of Reunion and Mauritius, to relive the golden age of pirates and corsairs.
A journey which will also take them to Brittany, to Saint-Malo, established as a corsair capital by Louis XIV. Who were these adventurers who brought terror to the seas between the 17th and 19th centuries? How did they end up embodying an ideal of equality and freedom? Thanks to the magic of 3D, our two very special guides will bring back lost places and mythical ships.
Among the 3D reconstructions, let us mention the capture of the Virgin of the Cape, on April 26, 1721. The French pirate Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed La Buse, made history by attacking this flagship of the Portuguese fleet. Because on board was the greatest treasure that a buccaneer had ever laid hands on! Estimated to cost several billion euros, it was never found…
We will also witness the sinking of the Speaker, the first pirate wreck discovered in the world (in 1979). Hundreds of objects, which had been lying at the bottom of the ocean for more than three centuries, have been brought to the surface. They enlighten us about life on board a pirate ship, in which hundreds of sailors were crammed, embarked for many months. Difficult conditions which required a well-oiled organization, which is reflected in the layout of the boat.
