The Department of Hérault and the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service –Sdis 34– are strengthening their partnership to better protect the people of Hérault, as was decided during the session of the Departmental Assembly on Monday, December 16, 2024: in fact, the departmental advisors have approved several proposals relating to this partnership.
Partnership agreement 2025-2027
The partnership agreement between the Department and Sdis 34 for the period 2022-2024 coming to an end at the end of the year, a new multi-annual agreement for the years 2025 to 2027 was adopted.
She stares three objectives : first, guarantee a high level of public service provided, in close collaboration with all security and rescue stakeholders; then, ensure the best management of resources dedicated to public protection and security policy, and finally, strengthen the logic of pooling actions and resources between the Department and Sdis.
Budget of 53,300 M€
The departmental advisors also approved a financial contribution to the 2025 operating budget of Sdis for an amount of 53,300 M€.
Guaranteeing the safety of Hérault residents by supervising the working time of departmental agents engaged as volunteer firefighters -spv- is one of the main objectives of this agreement. “The departmental councilors also voted in favor of revising the 2013 agreement relating to the working time of departmental agents engaged as volunteer firefighters. It thus aims to facilitate the engagement of these volunteer agents while ensuring compatibility between their missions at Sdis and their professional obligations within the community,” confirms the president’s office. Kléber Mesquida. And to add that “it is a question of promoting and protecting the agents engaged as volunteer firefighters”.
4,513 volunteer firefighters
The Sdis 34 with at its head as director the general controller Eric Florèscounts approximately 4,513 volunteer firefighters which represent a significant part of its total workforce in addition to 852 professional firefighters and technical and administrative staff. “This high proportion of volunteers highlights the importance of volunteer firefighters in ensuring the continuity of fire and rescue services, particularly in a department, which can be exposed to varied risks such as forest fires and floods,” analyzes the Department.
If the agreement signed between the Department and Sdis 34 governs the terms of engagement of departmental agents as volunteer firefighters, certain modifications are now necessary in the face of new operational and administrative challenges.
Un double engagement
The revision of this agreement plans to better protect these agents, particularly with regard to their rights and remuneration during periods of intervention, while ensuring the continuity of their tasks within the Department of Hérault, to strengthen collaboration between the Department and Sdis 34 to better coordinate the absences of volunteer firefighters and guarantee that rescue missions can be carried out without disrupting the Department's services, to promote the civic engagement of volunteers while reconciling the imperatives of the public service, thus guaranteeing a strengthened partnership with the Sdis, while valuing the agents of the Department in their dual commitment.
This month of December, after a year that was not easy, don't forget to welcome the helmeted riders of Hérault during their traditional tour calendars. One day or another, you will need them by dialing 18 or 112, think about it. This small financial gesture honors our brave firefighters and rescuers. A word of advice: be vigilant, because fake firefighters who knock on your door turn out to be real crooks.
What was the outcome this year?
“Through this agreement, the Department recognizes and values the commitment of its agents as volunteer sappers and underlines the importance of their contribution to public safety and their expertise in the management of emergency situations,” welcomes the departmental council of Hérault. A convention which comes just a few weeks before the announcement of the operational assessment of the interventions of a still busy year 2024. Will they exceed those of 2023? With 74,076 interventions in 2023, they were down 9% compared to 2022, which was 79,806. We will soon be fixed, there is no fire!
