African Ballon d’Or: Serhou Guirassy on his way to a historic triumph

The identity of the best African player of the year 2024 will be revealed this Monday, December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco. Among the five contenders vying to win this prestigious title, Guinean international Serhou Guirassy stands out alongside Ademola Lookman (Nigeria), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast) and the South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. These world-class talents are vying for the ultimate recognition of African football.

With exceptional statistics, the Syli National striker seems in a good position to win the African Ballon d’Or this year. If he wins this evening, Serhou Guirassy would become the second Guinean player to win this prestigious title since 1972, the year Chérif Souleymane was crowned.
Guirassy’s 2023-2024 season has been nothing short of impressive: he has scored 30 goals in 30 games for Stuttgart in all competitions. He played a key role in Stuttgart’s outstanding performance as they finished runners-up in the Bundesliga. On an individual level, the 28-year-old Guinean striker finished second top scorer in the German championship and fifth in Europe.

His brilliant form allowed him to complete an 18 million euro transfer to Borussia Dortmund, where he continued his brilliant career. Since his arrival, he has scored 12 goals, including 6 in the Champions League, confirming his place among the best European strikers.

In selection, the Dortmund striker also shone during the qualifiers for the next CAN in Morocco. In four appearances with Syli National, Guirassy scored 6 goals. Although Guinea was eliminated in qualifying, he finished second top scorer, behind Moroccan Brahim Diaz (7 goals).

Despite a disappointing experience during the last CAN, Serhou Guirassy remains one of the big favorites for the title of best African player of the year. His exemplary career testifies to his consistency and his talent, qualities which could well propel him to the top of African football.
The 2024 CAF Awards ceremony promises to be a memorable event, celebrating the excellence of African football in all its forms. In addition to the Ballon d’Or, several other distinctions will be awarded, notably for Best Coach, Best National Team and Best Club.
