All Montreal metro lines were shut down on Saturday evening due to young individuals who allegedly sprayed an irritating substance – similar to cayenne pepper – on other users at Place-des station. -Arts, according to the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM). They then fled by metro.
Service resumed across the entire network around 9:30 p.m.
Around twenty people were reportedly inconvenienced by the gas, but no one was taken to hospital.
According to the SPVMa conflict between two groups of individuals that occurred around 8:20 p.m. is believed to be the cause of the irritant gas spill.
About twenty minutes after the event, four people were arrested at Peel station, then released. They are not considered suspects.
Authorities have not made any arrests at this time and an investigation is ongoing.
The SPVM explains that the entire network was shut down in order to avoid “cross contamination”. In addition, certain green line stations were evacuated preventively, including Place-des-Arts, Berri-UQAM and Peel.
