The sovereign pontiff is due to arrive around 9 a.m. at airport and leave shortly after 6 p.m. This is the first time that a Pope will set foot on Corsican soil.

The high point of this day will obviously be the mass presided over by Pope Francis at 3:30 p.m., in the open air, in front of 8,000 people.

Thousands of others will follow this in town, on one of the many giant screens installed for the occasion. Without counters those who will witness the passage of the popemobile this morning, along the seafront.

Between 100,000 and 150,000 people are expected to attend Ajaccio for the occasion.
