The Traffic Information and Coordination Center recently published an explanatory video concerning individual taxi fares in Algeria, in order to better inform citizens and travelers on the prices applied for taxi journeys.
This video, broadcast on the center’s “Tariki” page, highlights essential information relating to individual taxi rates, in compliance with the ministerial decree of December 30, 2017. This initiative aims to bring transparency to the taxi sector. public transport, particularly in terms of costs.
The basics of individual taxi pricing
The fare for individual taxis is calculated based on the distance traveled. According to Ministerial Decree number 17/945, the basic rates are clear and defined for different distance ranges. For journeys with a distance of less than 5 kilometers, the starting fare is set at 20 DZD, regardless of the actual distance traveled. This means that as soon as a customer gets in a taxi, they will have to pay at least this amount, even if the ride is a very short distance, such as just a few meters.
This pricing approach is designed to simplify calculations and avoid any ambiguity during small trips. Thus, even for a journey of less than 10 meters, the passenger will have to pay a minimum fare of 20 DZD. This system is particularly useful in large cities where short journeys are frequent, thus ensuring a certain regularity in the invoicing of journeys.
Pricing per kilometer beyond 5 kilometers
When the distance exceeds 5 kilometers, another rule comes into play: the pricing becomes 23 DZD per kilometer traveled. This means that for each additional kilometer beyond the first 5, the price will be increased by 23 DZD. This rate per additional kilometer is applied gradually, depending on the exact distance traveled, thus guaranteeing a fair and transparent rate for the passenger and the driver.
This approach makes it possible to control the price of longer journeys while avoiding excessive or unforeseen increases. Fare calculation is now more accurate, and passengers can easily estimate the cost of their ride based on the distance they plan to travel. This system is particularly suitable for journeys outside urban centers where distances may be longer.
The Traffic Information and Coordination Center took the initiative to publish this explanatory video to raise awareness among the public and taxi drivers of the current rates. This helps avoid conflicts or misunderstandings between passengers and taxi drivers, and promotes better transparency in the transport sector. The aim is to increase the confidence of taxi users by providing them with a clear and precise view of the prices they should expect to pay, depending on the distance of their journey.
In addition to transparency, this initiative also contributes to the regulation of the public transport market. The prices defined by the ministerial decree make it possible to control the prices charged, while guaranteeing a certain fairness for customers. Taxi drivers are also encouraged to respect established standards, which helps prevent abuse or fraudulent practices.
