Weather: Will it snow at Christmas? Milan, Rome, where yes, where no

With the approach of the Christmas holidays, the weather report becomes the subject of discussions and expectations, especially for those who dream of a Noël snowy.

In recent years, due to climate changecelebrations in Italy were often accompanied by temperatures gentle, even in the mountains, and an absence of significant phenomena.

This year, however, the atmospheric picture could turn out to be different, with winter scenarios closer to the climatic average for the period.

Atmospheric contrasts and unstable weather

Currently, intense exchanges of air masses along the meridians characterize the weather report across the entire European continent.

From thehot air tropical flows towards the north, while flows ofair froid Arctic descend towards the south, creating ideal conditions for the formation of Low Pressures deep.

At the same time, High Pressure Areas particularly robust are manifested, bringing extreme variability and sudden climatic changes, typical of extreme weather.

In this situation, theItaly is in a transition phase between a “winter autumn” and a real Winterwith temperatures and atmospheric dynamics more in line with the season.

Weather forecast for Christmas: cold, but frost-free

Current projections indicate that temperatures during the Christmas period will be lower than those recorded last year.

In the days preceding Noëll’African anticyclone may make a brief appearance, but thereafter ocean currents and more temperate European high pressures are expected to prevail.

This will promote a stable climate and not excessively cold in a large part of theItalyespecially in the Southern Italy and the Big Islands.

Those who decide to spend the holidays in montagne will find fresh snow thanks to recent rainfall, with temperatures ideal for enjoying outdoor activities.

Although no significant frost waves are expected, a few episodes of intense cold could occur, particularly in the regions of Northern Italy.

Possible snowy surprises in the North-West

One of the most interesting predictions concerns the possibility of snowfall in the regions of North-West Italy during the Christmas holidays.

In particular, in the Po plaina cushionair froid begins to form, creating favorable conditions for the arrival of snow, especially in cities like Turin, Wedge et Alexandria.

However, current projections require further confirmation, as pulses ofair froid forecasts do not yet seem sufficient to generate large-scale snow precipitation.

Meanwhile, in the Central Italy and the Southern ItalyTHE temperatures will remain milder, with greater atmospheric variability, but significant snow-related phenomena are unlikely to occur.

Exceptional cold in Europe and impact in Italy

While theItaly awaits confirmation on possible snow surprises, the rest of theEurope is experiencing a particularly cold period.

In the Iberian Peninsulain particular, the temperatures reached exceptionally low values, with anomalies of up to 10°C below average at 1500 meters altitude. Spain et Portugal recorded a rare extension of snow cover for the month of Decembera phenomenon that had not been observed for decades.

These conditions, also influenced by large-scale atmospheric configurations, could partly extend to theItalyparticularly in areas of Northern Italywhere the flow ofair froid coming from Central Europe finds privileged access.

However, for the moment, no extreme phenomenon is expected for our Peninsula, with the cold which will be limited to sporadic episodes.

A cold Christmas but without extreme frost

Although the idea of a Noël snowy is fascinating, the current weather conditions do not suggest a wave of gel comparable to the events of past years, such as that which struck theItaly and theEurope whole in 2018.

However, the presence of a cold cushion in the Northern Italy and a certain atmospheric instability could reserve snowy surprises in certain areas, particularly in the Northwest.
