With the arrival of the film The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim a few days ago in our cinemas, promotion was in full swing and it was on this occasion that the co-writer of Peter Jackson’s films, Philippa Boyens, spoke out about the Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The Lord of the Rings: Philippa Boyens speaks out about the conflict between the films and the series
Since the series was announced The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has caused a lot of ink to be spilled and its very mixed success, coupled with a blatant lack of respect for the universe created by JRR Tolkien, has of course led to a comparison with the magnificent films of Peter Jackson. Even if when we know the literary works, the adaptations of the New Zealand filmmaker are of course open to criticism, the fact remains that the mastery of the basic material is still present and this has given us films among the greats of the 7th art.
After many years of absence from our cinemas, Middle Earth returned in series form in 2022 with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power at Amazon, before returning to the cinema a few days ago with The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim at Warner and they have already planned a new film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum for 2026. With so many productions, fans of the franchise see a rivalry developing. However, what do the main stakeholders think? During a recent interview with our colleagues at GamesRadar+, the co-writer of Lord of the Rings a you Hobbit Philippa Boyens spoke on the subject:
I sincerely think and hope it’s true, that about the series The Rings of Powerexpanding this Middle Earth universe is a good thing.
I particularly like this chapter in the history of Middle-earth. Some fans seem to think that there is a rivalry or even conflict between the projects, but that is absolutely not the case and I don’t think this is the case on Amazon’s side either. These works should complement each other. Let there be more adaptations of Tolkien’s work! Can you ever have too much?
