Junior Team Canada: Mathieu Cataford earns his place

Mathieu Cataford will participate in the next World Junior Hockey Championship. The Océanic forward was selected to represent Canada for the tournament presented from December 26 to January 5 in Ottawa.

Cataford is one of the 14 forwards chosen, with Ethan Gauthier of the Voltigeurs de Drummondville and Bradly Nadeau of the Chicago Wolves, the AHL’s farm club of the Carolina Hurricanes, whose rights in Canadian junior hockey belong to the Océanic.

Injured in last Saturday’s game in Chicoutimi, the 19-year-old center missed the start of Team Canada’s selection camp.

However, his position seemed assured, since he played only one of the two preparatory matches, that of Friday, against a team bringing together the best players on the university circuits.

Good attitude

“I think I gave a good impression by playing according to my identity. I know that the leaders really liked my camp last summer. They came to watch my matches this season. I worked on what I could control while keeping a good attitude,” he said following this match.

Mathieu Cataford obtained 38 points (11-27) in 27 games this season with the Rimouski Océanic.

For his part, Nadeau did not participate in selection camp this week, but was guaranteed a spot after being made available by the Hurricanes.
