The driver market is unpredictable, and the next few years will be decisive in shaping the future of the Scuderia and that of Carlos Sainz.
While Ferrari is already starting to consider the post-Lewis Hamilton era, the possibility of Carlos Sainz returning to the Italian team is resurfacing. After leaving Maranello at the end of the 2024 season to join Williams, the Spanish driver could well write a new chapter in his history with the Scuderia.
A separation marked by the arrival of Hamilton
Carlos Sainz’s adventure at Ferrari ended after a 2024 season marked by two Grand Prix victories, an unprecedented feat for him. However, the announcement of the recruitment of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton disrupted plans. With Charles Leclerc firmly established as leader, Sainz’s place became uncertain.
“When I learned that Lewis would join Ferrari, I quickly understood that my position was compromised” explained Sainz in the podcast Beyond The Grid. He recognized that the arrival of a pilot of this caliber represented an inevitable sacrifice for him.
Relations still strong between Sainz and Ferrari
Despite his departure, Sainz maintained good relations with Ferrari. Frédéric Vasseur, team director, recently confirmed that discussions had already taken place for a possible return.
“We have talked about it several timesVasseur told DAZN. With only 10 teams and a handful of top drivers, the opportunities always come. But for now, everyone must focus on their respective goals.”
Lewis Hamilton’s likely retirement at the end of his contract could open doors for Sainz. However, Ferrari is keeping other options in mind, including promising young talents like Oliver Bearman, currently at Haas, or Dino Beganovic, from Formula 2.
For his part, Carlos Sainz is fully focused on his project with Williams. The Spaniard aspires to return this historic team to the top of Formula 1. With his experience and leadership, he hopes to take on this ambitious challenge and prove that he remains one of the most competitive drivers on the field.
A strategic decision for Ferrari
A return of Sainz to Ferrari would make sense. His experience, in-depth knowledge of the team and strong performance make him a serious candidate to succeed Hamilton. For Sainz, this opportunity would represent a symbolic way of coming full circle and making a lasting mark on the history of Ferrari.
However, nothing is decided. The driver market is unpredictable, and the next few years will be decisive in shaping the future of the Scuderia and that of Carlos Sainz. One thing is certain: the 2028 season could well hold many surprises.
