Between the gas boiler and the heat pump, the choice is quickly made. In France, more and more people are favoring gas boilers, a heating method that goes against the ecological transition.
The major work has begun for James Suin. The new owner decided to change the entire heating system in his new home, replacing the old oil boiler with one that runs on gas. His installer had also offered him a heat pump, but James was quickly cooled down, due to the price of the latter. “The installation cost 15,000 euros,” he explains. On average, a gas boiler costs three to four times less than a heat pump. Enough to attract more and more owners. Since last January, the number of installations of this heating method has increased by 15%.
The price of gas is also a reason for this increase in installations. It has returned to much lower levels, reaching 45 euros per megawatt hour, compared to 250 euros in 2022. However, this method of heating does not go in the direction of the ecological transition and could therefore be taxed more.
