The IDF has given a name to the operation underway in Syria since the fall of dictator Bashar El Assad: Arrow of Bashan – from the biblical name of the territory located west of the Golan Heights.
350 fighter planes have participated so far in this operation which consists of destroying the military capabilities of the Assad regime so that they do not fall into hostile hands.
More than 320 targets were attacked from Damascus to Tartous including tanks, planes, helicopters, ships, anti-aircraft defense systems, missiles, rockets, weapons manufacturing sites, warehouses weapons, scud missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, drones, and others. 70 to 80% of the Assad regime’s military capabilities have already been destroyed.
In the buffer zone, land forces are also continuing their takeover in order to protect the border.
Defense Minister Israel Katz was today at a navy base in Haifa where he said: “The IDF has been acting in recent days in Syria to destroy strategic capabilities that threaten the State of Israel. The navy is working to destroy the Syrian fleet and is doing so successfully. I warn the rebel leaders in Syria: those who follow Assad’s path will end up like Assad. We will not allow an extremist Islamist entity to act against the State of Israel. We will do everything to eliminate the threat.”
He added: “Together with the Prime Minister, I have instructed the IDF to create a demilitarized defense zone and ensure that no threat comes from southern Syria, without a permanent Israeli presence to prevent the installation and the organization of a terrorist force in Syria and the creation of a reality that would be identical to what existed in Lebanon and Gaza before October 7. We will not allow this, we will not tolerate any threats to the State of Israel, we will continue to act forcefully to eliminate the threats.”
In this context, Israeli officials affirmed that the operation in Syria is nearing its end and is expected to end in the coming days.
The UN, for its part, calls for “an end to movements” and “Israeli strikes” in Syria. “It is very worrying to see Israeli strikes and movements on Syrian territory. This must stop. This is extremely important,” Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria, said at a press conference in Geneva.
