In an interview with our colleagues at El Pais, the Ukrainian Minister of Finance, Serhiy Marchenko, notably returned to the concern aroused by the imminent arrival of Donald Trump at the head of the United States. Indeed, the latter, after his election in the 2024 presidential election, announced that we should “probably” expect less aid from the USA.
He had already announced it several times before confirming it during an interview with NBC News. Donald Trump indicated that Ukraine should expect to receive less aid from the United States when he returns to the White House, after his election to the US presidential election in 2024.
Information which has reached the ears of Kyiv and which seems to raise some concern about Ukraine's capacity to be able to pursue its war which opposes it to Russia.
A subject on which Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko returned to El Pais.
According to the Ukrainian representative, even if the United States ended its support, “we have enough funds and weapons to resist at least until mid-2025. We will ensure sufficient budgetary allocations for the purchase of ammunition and of military equipment needed in 2025.”
He adds: “We must have a plan to create the necessary conditions for cooperation with the new administration (of Donald Trump, editor's note). It is in the natural interest of Ukraine to build trust for cooperation. I think this should be a priority strategy as for Ukraine as well as for Europe.”
In short, the Ukrainian minister underlines that it will therefore be important for his country to use this first half of 2025 to continue negotiations with its allies, particularly the United States.
