DECRYPTION – The more than 5 million employees who benefit from this lunch assistance only have 8.75 euros per day on average, part of which is paid out of their own pocket. Too little, they believe, to feed themselves outside.
“My restaurant vouchers are worth 7 euros: fortunately they can be bought at the supermarket, otherwise I clearly wouldn't be able to use them at the restaurant.” Like Daniel, an employee in the Lyon suburbs, many of them find the amount of this lunch assistance far too low. What's more when they hear restaurateurs pleading for the end of the exemption allowing them to be used since 2022 on all food products in the supermarket, and not just on immediately consumable products. Renewed by the National Assembly for 2025 and 2026, the measure was however blocked in the Senate at the end of December, due to lack of government.
January 1 could mark the return of more restrictive rules of use at the supermarket: pasta, rice or even flour could no longer be paid for with restaurant vouchers. Only foods that can be consumed immediately – such as sandwiches or other pasta boxes – would still be eligible. This…
