The fire apparently started from a fryer, then spread to the food stands K (Mékong and company) and L (O Landes farmer), located at the end of the alley, in the middle of the market. The wooden sheds burned to the ground within minutes. Firefighters quickly arrived on site to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other chalets. A security perimeter was set up and the Christmas market remained closed this Wednesday morning.
On site, traders watched helplessly as the flames ravaged the buildings. “We were on site preparing for the opening when it burned. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but it affects us all morally,” confided one of them. The owners of the burned sheds were in shock. They were not able to save much, apart from some kitchen equipment, chairs and tables, helped by the other exhibitors present this Wednesday morning.
At 11 a.m., the market’s usual opening time, the doors remained closed, to the disappointment of some families who had to turn back. According to Bordeaux town hall, the Christmas market will be able to reopen its doors in the afternoon, after the rubble has been cleared and the site has been secured by firefighters. An investigation will have to determine the exact causes of the fire.
