In the United States: A fire threatens Malibu, where many stars reside

A fire spread rapidly on Tuesday in Malibu, near Los Angeles, where many celebrities live, threatening buildings and prompting evacuations, local authorities announced.

The “Franklin fire” broke out Monday evening and quickly progressed in this city of California, in the western United States, until burning more than 730 hectares, according to the state agency Cal Fire. Pepperdine University, near the fire, announced on X that it had suspended classes and exams on Tuesday.

Videos broadcast by local media show plumes of smoke and flames in front of a library where students wearing protective masks took refuge. Local authorities are conducting “door-to-door” evacuations, according to the city of Malibu.

Many Hollywood celebrities reside on this coastline, one of the most desirable areas in California. Much of the southern part of the state is placed on red alert by the United States Weather Service (NWS), with gusts and low humidity increasing the risk of fires.

After two rainy winters which provided a relative respite, California is experiencing a very active fire season this year. This summer, the “Golden State” suffered from several heat waves, signs of global warming. In July-August, California suffered the fourth largest fire in its history.
