After a change in the collection day, trash piles up in the city center

The residents of downtown (Vienna) can’t take it anymore. Since the changes to the garbage collection schedule, trash cans have been piling up on the sidewalks, with all the inconveniences that this entails. On the side of elected officials, firmness is required: no other collection day is planned, report our colleagues from The New Republic.

Implemented in September, the change was nevertheless based on good intentions. With a first collection on Monday, the idea was to move the collection from Friday to Thursday to avoid the accumulation of waste in the street during the weekend. However, this phenomenon finally recurred during the week. Normally, trash cans should be taken out the day before collection days from 7 p.m. A rule that is little respected.

Insufficient budget for a third day of collection

Black bags, sometimes with strong odors, therefore accumulate at the foot of buildings and businesses. Residents are calling on the authorities to improve the situation. But with state budget cuts, the idea of a third day of collection, which would cost between 100,000 and 150,000 euros in Greater Poitiers, is impossible to implement.

Prevention, signs, warnings, etc., not working, the town hall is now relying on fines to make the last recalcitrants comply. This therefore envisages the creation of a team of three sworn agents to draw up fines.
